A PETITION has started against a proposal to introduce charges in Leominster’s Etnam Street car park.
The car park is currently free for motorists for a three-hour period but Herefordshire Council would like to charge drivers 60p for up to an hour’s stay and £1.10 for up to two hours.
Herefordshire Council said the changes were agreed following consultation with the town council.
But supporters of the petition are worried that trade in the town will be hit.
Councillor Peter McCaull, the town’s mayor, said: “We want the situation to remain as it is.
“This is going to devastate Leominster."
The petition, which can be found in many shops in the town and also on the town council's website, states that withdrawing free parking in Etnam Street will “result in fewer visitors and shoppers and many businesses will not survive”.
