THE team behind Hay-on-Wye arts venue The Globe is fighting for a new licence amid complaints of noise levels and drunkenness.

The Globe at Hay, home of the How the Light Gets In and Crunch festivals, has applied for a new licence from Powys County Council so it can continue running events throughout the year, both inside and out.

The venue, a converted chapel in Newport Street, also runs special events on bank holidays and New Year’s Eve.

Almost two dozen people travelled from Hay to support the Globe at a licensing meeting in Brecon on Monday.

But they left disappointed when councillors adjourned the decision.

Councillor Steve Davies, chairman of the Powys regulatory committee, said they had no choice but to postpone as the Globe was now asking for slightly shorter opening hours than originally applied for and licensing officers, police and environment health staff had not had time to consider the changes.

Objections

Powys County Council had received a number of letters of objection and a petition with more than 100 signatures against the Globe’s plans to extend licensed hours.

Environmental health officers objected on the grounds that there had been complaints about the venue, while police raised concerns about noise levels and drunkenness.

Speaking at the meeting in Brecon, solicitor for the Globe Tim Davies said there were “some issues” with the police objections.

“It’s simply wrong to say we’re trying to replace Clyro Court,” he said, adding that the Globe is not and does not want to become a nightclub.
