A PIRATE-themed playground has opened its shipshaped doors near Hay-on- Wye in memory of a little boy who lost his fight against a brain tumour.

More than 200 people came to the official opening of Clyro School’s new playground on Friday.

The park, complete with a zip wire, pirate boats and a crow’s nest, was built in memory of pupil Tom Grahame who died in December 2010, aged six, after a 16-month-battle with a malignant tumour.

His mum, Corasinde, and dad, Angus, have since raised more than £280,000 through the Tom Grahame Trust, a charity they founded in memory of their fun-loving, pirate-mad son.

As well as opening the playground, the family has is funding a three-year research project at the Universirty of Newcastle into medulloblastoma tumours and working with the Macmillan cancer charity on Tom’s Gift, a scheme to give every single UK child diagnosed with a brain tumour a gift to lift their spirits.

Tom’s Pirate Playground was officially opened by the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, the Right Rev John Davies, on October 19.
