WE should introduce a large congestion charge in Hereford – that is where my capitalism ends.
This should be used alongside park-and-ride schemes on the edge of the city, with kerbed cycle routes and an affordable greener bus service.
Those tendering for the bus service would need to agree to affordable fares, subsidised by the congestion charge while paying their workers a decent living wage.
Those who choose to drive into the city and pay the charge will be paying for those who choose to travel without clogging the city.
The benefits to us are vast. Choosing to walk or cycle is healthy for us all, and who has ridden past the lines of traffic thinking how does it make sense?
Cutting our carbon footprint is not only good for the environment but good for us too.
So instead of thinking how do we accommodate the traffic, why aren’t we thinking about how we get rid of it?
Sorry for the socialism, but I am afraid it is here to stay!
