LEDBURY historian, Jennifer Harrison has created a map showing the house or place of work of all the 85 men from Ledbury who died during the First World War.

Mrs Harrison, who is well-known locally for organising exhibitions in St Michael and All Angels Church about the First World War, and how it affected the local community, used a contemporary map as a base and then employed the symbol of a poppy to mark relevant houses or workplaces; and there is also an index of the names.

Local lady Brenda Hill helped with some of the positioning "as some of the numbering was different 100 years ago".

Two maps have been created for display.

Mrs Harrison said: "The maps at present are on display in The Homend Shopping Mall, which printed and mounted them.

"The map will also be on show at exhibitions later in the year."

And now there is another major exhibition to be arranged.

Mrs Harrison said: "My fifth exhibition about Life in Ledbury during the First World War will be held in November, in St Michael’s church, to coincide with the centenary of the Armistice.

"This exhibition will cover Ledbury and the War during the period 1918 to 1919."

Mrs Harrison is well known locally for producing two memorial books for Ledbury Parish Church, detailing the local men who died during the First World War.

These form an invaluable and moving written record, alongside the Second World War memorial book which was compiled by Wing Commander Don Rule several years ago.

It was also Mrs Harrison's intention to list not only names, but to add biographical details, wherever possible, and this information has fed into the creation of the special map.
