LEDBURY Harriers joined in the “Finish it for Matt” run on Tuesday night.

A group from the club set off from the Farmer’s Arms in Wellington Heath to complete the last 3.7 miles of the London Marathon in honour of Masterchef contestant Matt Campbell, who died 3.7 miles short of the finish.

Runs have taken place throughout the world with each runner being asked to donate £5 to Matt’s charity. The Harriers and the Farmers Arms have both made a donation to Matt’s charity.

Matt was running in memory of his late father and hoped to raise £2,500 for the Cumbria-based Brathay Trust, a youth charity based at Brathay in Cumbria. The organisation's main focus is on training and developing general skills for youth, including Lake District-based outdoor education and experiential learning, but also organises people and organisation development courses for adults. The charity is currently receiving donations by the minute amounting to a total of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Amongst the runners last Tuesday were Sally and Steve Rooke from Much Marcle and Denise Wright from Wellington Heath who all completed the London Marathon; the hottest on record. Sally raised funds for St Michael's Hospice in memory of India Wilkinson and Denise was sponsoring Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, raising £3,000.

Denise joined Ledbury Harriers two and a half years ago as an enthusiastic amateur she is now a fully fledged marathon runner.

“I felt it would be a small but fitting tribute to get the Harriers involved in this event remembering we are all mortal, taking nothing for granted and to remember Matt,” she said.
