THE current exhibition at the Apple Store Gallery, Glyn Griffiths: An Artist Remembered, celebrates the work of an artist regarded as one of Wales’s most popular and influential painters of the last century.

Born in the Rhondda Valley, Glyn spent the last 12 years of his life in Hereford, where he taught part time at what was then Hereford College of Art and Design.

He studied at Cardiff School of Art under Ceri Richards, and, after serving in the Royal Navy, he joined Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts, teaching illustration. He’s still remembered there for his mastery of media and the dynamic vigour of his teaching.

He exhibited with Midlands Art Groups, selling almost all that he could paint.

Having moved to Herefordshire, Glyn continued to paint and draw and carried out a series of large flower paintings, a selection of which are on show at Castle House Hotel as part of the exhibition.

Glyn was regarded by those who knew him as a larger than life character, but as his wife Cynthia says, he was a very private man and became very diffident about showing his work to anyone.

“After he died I was amazed at how much in the way of drawings and studies, water colours and almost finished oil paintings and unframed work there actually was, in folders, cupboards, drawers – hidden away,” she said.
