DISABLED carriage driver Nick Jones of Whitten Way, Hereford, came home smiling after winning two classes against able bodied drivers at the annual BDS Wales Carriage Driving Show and two firsts at Burwarton Show which has enabled Nick to qualify for the Osborne Refrigeration Championships later this summer.
Nick has been a horse enthusiast since he was six, first attended Riding For The Disabled at Yarkhill in 1987 and is still with them 26 years later.
Nick is a well know character in Hereford, working at Belmont’s Tesco – which has sponsored some of his driving – and having recently become ambassador for HRDA which is based at Holme Lacy’s agricultural college campus.
After a successful riding career, due to his disabilities, Nick learned to carriage drive 15 years ago with HRDA and Kate Cart, a pony owned by Jill Knowles on loan to HRDA – and he hasn’t stopped driving since.
Nick is an active member of the local HDDG and a BDS member and regularly competes at local and national level in both disabled and non-disabled classes.
Barbara Millman, a driving client and trustee of HRDS says “Nick is an inspiration to all our drivers and is so generous allowing us to drive his own turnout.”
