A LARGE crowd of buyers from across South Wales and the West Country were in attendance at the 4th On Farm Production Sale of 300 Head of Breeding Cattle at Pentwyn Farm, Neath on behalf of Huw & Rhian Leyshon.

With a larger proportion of three quarter bred heifers forward with mainly Limousin cross calves at foot by elite Limousin bulls such as Lodge Hamlet, prices achieved were above expectation.

The quiet nature and consistency of the cattle were a particular feature of the sale and ensured a strong demand throughout.

The sale peaked at £4,600 for a three year old Pedigree Limousin Bull selling to E Averill, Bryncethin.

The breeding females sold to an exceptional trade and peaked at £3,100 for a Limousin sired heifer out of a British Blue Cow with her Limousin cross Bull calf at foot selling to I R Tay, Ystradfellte.

Hereford cross Friesian heifers stole the show and met a fantastic demand selling to £2,800 for a Black Hereford heifer and Charolais cross Bull and bought by C Morgan, Pontardawe.

Limousin heifers were generally the easiest to sell and peaked at £2,600 for a September 2015 born heifer with her April born Limousin sired calf at foot selling to P Thomas, Pencoed.

The Autumn calving heifers lacked the spark compared to the spring calvers in comparison and peaked at £2,200 for a Black Limousin with Limousin heifer calf at foot and due again September to Limousin bull selling to OTW Chandler & Co, Abergavenny.

Incalf heifers sold to a strong trade and peaked at £1,600 for a British Blue cross due shortly and bought by R Hammett, Morriston.

A smaller consignment of Bulling heifers also saw an excellent demand peaking at £1,100 for British Blue cross Freisian.
