THE county’s smallest school has had another boost to its survival chances with MP Bill Wiggin saying the changes to education passed by parliament this week gave tiny Dilwyn primary “optimistic” options for the future.
Mr Wiggin said the Academies Bill made the prospect of parents securing an independent school in Dilwyn easier, particularly with the length of time Herefordshire Council has given for consultation on the school’s closure.
“I’m very optimistic about Dilwyn’s survival and everyone I’ve spoken to at Westminster agrees, “ said Mr Wiggin.
Last week the Hereford Times reported top-perfoming St Mary’s RC High School as standing by its offer of a pioneering faith-based federation with Dilwyn.
St Mary’s head Clive Lambert urged the council to “be bold and show courage” in supporting the proposal.
The council says that with 31 pupils – and projections of very few on the way – Dilwyn doesn’t have enough to survive. The council’s cabinet has backed the start of the shutdown procedure, but there will be about a year of consultation before the decision is finally taken.
