Clehonger Primary School’s council members have rounded off a successful academic year by bringing in two new friendship benches.

Youngsters wrote to local businesses to ask for materials to build some seats and so were delighted when two complete benches arrived.

Council supervisor and Year 3 teacher Grace Sage said students came up with the idea collectively at a regular weekly meeting held by chairman Lewis Campbell and vicechairman Bill Whistance, both from Year 6.

“Tesco and Tudors garden company both gave us a bench so now, if pupils are lonely in the playground, they sit on these special benches and pupils ask them to join in with their games,”

she said.

Pupils were also preparing to mark the end of the year – which also saw the school council buy playground equipment using proceeds from a new toast tuck-shop and raise money for Children in Need – with three separate showings of their play The Rocky Monster Show.
