A PRIMARY school is out of special measures and has been saluted by Ofsted for the “significant progress” shown in turning itself around.

Broadlands, in Tupsley, Hereford, was the only county school in special measures, which were imposed by Ofsted in late 2008.

Now, Ofsted says staff have worked tirelessly through tough times in addressing the issues raised by those initial inspections that saw the school’s effectiveness condemned as inadequate.

On return recently, inspectors saw evidence of:

■ Pupils working hard at the appropriate levels, with lessons being “well planned and engaging” and standards in writing “transformed”.

■ Much-improved behaviour and a strong care ethos.

■ Very supportive parents as improvements were under way.

■ A huge part played by the school’s governors in getting the school back on track.

The report pitches clear priorities for Broadlands to meet in future but recognises that the base to build on significant progress made so far is in place.

Headteacher Lindsey Taylor said the success was something of which the whole school community could be proud. “It has been a real team effort and well deserved for all the hard work,” she said.
