A HEREFORD college has defended its use of two "vital", large generators which one man says blighted his Christmas Day.

Hereford Sixth Form College was called selfish and incompetent by Aylestone Hill resident Jeffrey Hancorn because of the generators its using due to a power failure at the Folly Lane site.

He said he was "incandescent with rage" at the "complete disregard for its neighbours" and he could hear the two generators running while inside his home on Christmas Day.

But Hereford Sixth Form College said the power supply to all three colleges in Folly Lane would have to be cut to repair the major failure.

Executive principal Peter Cooper said the college takes great pride in its community relations and always wants to do all it can for its locality.

But he said with a combination of exams and rail strikes in the last week of term, the college needed to be able to run and support students from home who were unable to travel.

"The college is the central life community for many of our students so when the power failed, it was vital for us to respond and bring in generators," he said.

"We must maintain our network and support systems for our vulnerable students so the generators will continue to operate until the connection is re-established shortly.

"We are very sorry for any disruption this has caused but know that our community will understand our need to be there for all our young people who have already suffered disruption with the pandemic and travel unreliability."
