A NEW-look bank branch has been officially opened by a long-standing customer who once starred in a Doctor Who episode.

Barclays relocated from Buttercross in Leominster to new premises in the town at Corn Street.

John Greenwood, who has banked with Barclays for 53 years, cut the ribbon to officially open the new branch.

Aged 88, Mr Greenwood lives just outside Leominster at Westhope.

He started banking with Barclays following a refusal by his own bank for £50 when he was working in London as an actor - he played D’Artagnan and Sir Lancelot in the Doctor Who episode, The Mind Robber.

After refusal from his own bank, he went into Barclays and they were able to action his request straight away - he has been with Barclays ever since.

The newly refurbished branch is part of the bank’s branch investment programme.

Branch manager Kim Pickford said as more people use banking online and mobile banking, the needs of people using high street banks have changed.

She said: "Customers will always have access to a Barclays colleague, whether that be in person, in branch, over the phone, web chat, video or through social media and we’ll go above and beyond to help customers understand and get the most out of all the options available.

"This is the latest in a long line of trial initiatives to improve service for Leominster customers. We have the latest in banking technology including quick pay points, power assisted doors and full disability access incorporating a low level till and dedicated interview rooms.”

Customers will also be invited to attend Tea and Teach sessions with Barclays staff, in branch or in the community, providing free advice on banking technology.
