AN Ofsted inspector said steps are being taken to improve a primary school in Hereford.

Broadlands Primary School in Broadlands Lane was rated as "requires improvement" at its last full Ofsted inspection in 2016.

A monitoring report has just been published by Ofsted which said that the leadership team is successfully making improvements in areas that needed addressing.

The report said: "Senior leaders and governors are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the last section 5 inspection in order for the school to become good."

Inspector Matt Meckin said the consistency of teaching at the school had improved, as had the quality of the presentation of pupils’ written work.

But he said there is still further action required including providing a consistent level of challenge for the most able pupils; ensuring that the teaching of reading is given a higher priority on the school improvement plan; and making sure that the school improvement plan and the subject action plans identify more precisely when actions will happen and how they will be measured for impact.

He said further improvements need to be made in mathematics but also said outcomes elsewhere in the school have risen steadily.

Overall, he said the school’s new leadership structure is having a positive impact.

Simon Robertson, executive headteacher, said he was pleased it had been recognised that in many parts of the school, outcomes were identified as rising steadily and that the level of development for early years and Key Stage 1 pupils is at least in line with the national average for 2017.

He added: "While the monitoring inspection makes it clear the school is continuing to improve, we will not be taking anything for granted as we know there is still work to do to achieve the consistently high standards that are required in all areas.

"We have raised the pupils’ expectations of what they can achieve and in areas such as mathematics and reading we know we must continue to challenge them to ensure they are all reaching the required levels as they prepare to enter senior schools.

"It is our job to give pupils at Broadlands the best possible start to their educational lives and I am really pleased that the hard work all the staff have been doing to make improvements has been recognised by Ofsted and that inspectors have spoken so positively about the progress being made here."
