JESSE Norman MP met with headteacher, Nigel Griffiths, pupils, staff and governors to share his delight at John Kyrle High School gaining a Certificate of Achievement from the House of Commons.

This award is in recognition of the school's commitment to democracy.

Mr Griffiths said there were numerous ways in which pupils engaged in voting.

These include the way in which pupils are selected for the school council by their peers.

Also, the school has mirrored national events with pupil candidates standing during general elections and individuals arguing for and against Brexit, leading to a whole-school vote.

Pupils produce their own manifestos and campaign in assemblies and through visiting classes. Mr Griffiths said, 'Mock Elections actively engage students with the democratic process and shows how politics affects their everyday lives.'

Mr Griffiths is always delighted to welcome Jesse to John Kyrle. In the past, Jesse has taken part in question-and-answer sessions with the sixth form, and presented a masterclass looking at preparation for the world of work. On this visit, he met pupils who had stood for election and discussed several issues with them including Brexit, Donald Trump, Edmund Burke and the National Farmers' Union.

Jesse Norman, MP added: "It's always very stimulating and very enjoyable to visit John Kyrle and talk to students, and this was no exception. They are such a lovely and engaging group of young people, and full of thoughtful and intelligent questions. I congratulate them and the school for winning this well deserved award."
