COFFEE - There will be a coffee morning with stalls selling cakes, books, nearly new clothes and jewellery at the church hall on Saturday from 10.30am to noon.

CONCERT - Knighton Amnesty Group is holding its annual concert next Thursday, October 25, at 7.30pm in Knighton Methodist Church.

The Corndon Singers and Camilla Cancantata will be performing a variety of songs from all ages in contrasting styles, from medieval jazz. Tickets are £6 on the door.

FRIGHT KNIGHT - Knighton and District Tourism Group and Town Forum are celebrating the town’s ‘walkers are welcome’ status with the launch of what it is hoped will become an annual October festival.

Knighton’s first mini walking festival is on Saturday and Sunday, at a stunning time of year in Radnorshire. In addition to walks with East Radnor Ramblers and the Offa’s Dyke Association’s Jim Saunders, there will be a ghost walk with well-known local horror writer Guy N Smith. You can hear stories from children’s authors Grant Jesse and Cat Weatherill and see The Woman in Black at Chapel Lawn’s Flicks in the Sticks. CONCERT - Knighton Town Silver Band held its autumn concert on October 6 in Knighton Community Centre with guests the Montgomeryshire Ladies Choir (Cor Merched Maldwyn) conducted by Ruth Gittins and accompanied by Dilys Hughes. Under the directorship of Steve Edwards, the band and choir’s repertoire was varied and imaginative and included everything from Welsh folk songs to Nobody Does It Better from one of the Bond films. During the evening. band president Mike Conway presented Steve Edwards and Cath Mellings with gifts from the band in appreciation of their year’s work with both senior and junior bands. The concert concluded with a rousing and patriotic piece called Lovely Jubilee by Gavin Somerset.

LIGHT UP A LIFE - The Light up a Life service to remember lost loved ones will be held at St Edward’s Church, Knighton, at 3pm on November 4. The preacher will be Rev Jill Groves, who is chaplain at St Michael’s Hospice, and the service will be led by Rev Melia Cope. Names to be read out during the service should be given to those at the entrance of the church on arrival or phoned in advance to Audrey Green on 01547 528289 or Margaret Davies on 528154.

ECO HOMES OPEN - On Saturday four ecohomes will be open to the public in the Presteigne and Knighton areas from 10am till 4pm. Paradise Farmhouse, Presteigne, has a large log pellet boiler and there will be a thermal imaging camera demo, information on wood storage in the Czech Republic at and Green Earth Energy log and pellet boilers.

Rhos Market Garden, Knighton, is a newbuild energy efficient house with gasifying log boiler, where the owners are growers and providers of organic vegetables, fruit and flowers. Church Cottage, Discoed, is an old house renovated to gain maximum passive heat integrating a solar-log boiler system.

Willey Chapel has a wood stove and insulating shutters, a coppicing for hearth and home, with a cafe and whittlers at work.

HARVEST SUPPER - The annual St Edward’s Church harvest supper and auction was held at the church hall with a buffet supper prepared by church members. Afterwards, all the fruit, vegetables, flowers and other produce was sold by Cecil Rudge, auctioneer for the evening, raising more than £70 for church funds. Raffle winners were Emma Bywater, Peter Cope, John Morgan and Joanna Bywater.

PROTEST - Members of Knighton Action for Peace and Justice were among concerned people from Wales and the borders who gathered on the steps of Y Senedd in Cardiff Bay to make their opposition to nuclear weapons clear. At a visual event involving a huge Welsh dragon and a tenth scale trident submarine, participants listened to speeches from five political parties, followed by performances including excerpts from The Trident Oratorio by Camilla Cancantata of Knighton.

Giant messages calling on the Welsh Government not to support nuclear weapons based in Wales, or anywhere were handed in to the First Minister. Messages read out included one from the Archbishop of Wales and from Hereford Peace Council.

THINK PINK - The annual Pink Party in Knighton to raise money for the charity Breakthrough Breast cancer raised £1,750, which includes match funding from Barclays Bank with the help of Jo Athanasiou and Lin Rees. Music for the evening was provided by Adam Olds and there were several competition including the best table won by staff from Knighton Hospital with their “Gordon’s Kitchen”. Best decorated bra was won by Lindsey Rogers and the best individual was Zoe Robinson. Main organisers Jackie Shaw, Sally Urwin and Jill Bennett thanked the RAFA girls for all their help, Barclays and all the businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes and balloons.
