Police in Hereford are asking the public to help discover the identity of a man whose body was found in the River Wye this morning.

The Old Bridge in the city was sealed off from 7.50am as emergency services recovered the body of a white man, aged between 40 and 60.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained and a post mortem examination is due to take place later.

Now investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death, Detective Constable Catherine Taylor has appealed for the public's help.

She said: "We are keen to identify who this man is so that we can let his next of kin know what has happened.

"We could really do with the public's help though, because the body discovered this morning does not appear to correspond with any missing people we currently have outstanding on the West Mercia force area.

"He is a white man aged 40 to 60. If you have a friend or family member who might fit this description and you haven't seen them for a few days, make sure that they are well and if you then have any concerns, please get in touch.

"I would also appeal to anyone who has been in the area around The Old Bridge recently and may have seen a man enter the water to contact us as well."

It is believed the may have been in the river for at least two to three days.

The Old Bridge has now fully reopened.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det Con Taylor on 0300 333 3000, quoting 69S 300512.
