ANNIVERSARY - Next Wednesday marks the 70th anniversary of a wartime cross-channel raid which saw the death of a promising county soldier. Guardsman Frederick Lewis was never found following Operation Chariot at St Nazaire in France on March 28, 1942, which saw a British attack on a heavily defended dry dock in Normandie. The 25- year-old, whose parents lived in Stauntonon- Wye, was on a motor launch supporting HMS Campbeltown which was loaded with delayed explosives and went off later in the day, putting the dock out of service for the rest of the Second World War.
