RECENTLY, while walking back from Hinton over the Greyfriars Bridge, I noticed how rusted and worn the railings are. Some of them have completely rusted through.

I realise that in these days of austerity, cuts have to be made to expenditure but surely there must be a health and safety issue here?

The railings have obviously not been maintained for many years and this must be a cause for concern. Many of these railings will have to be completely replaced at a cost to the council tax payer.

Surely, one of the reasons we pay council tax is for the council to maintain the infrastructure of the town.

Are they trying to save money by cutting back on urgent repairs?

This is a false economy. Instead of painting the railings every year they will now have to be replaced.

I remember the new bridge being built in the 60s. It took all the weight and stress of modern traffic off the old bridge and has been a wonderful servant to Hereford.

The least the council can do would be to maintain it to a high level so that it can continue for another 50 years to grace our city.
