PROTESTERS fighting plans for a new superstore in Ledbury will be hitting the street this Bank Holiday Monday.

A petition against Tesco’s plans to relocate to the Lower Road Trading Estate will be launched at the Ledbury Carnival.

Members of Ledbury Opposes Out of Town Superstores (LOTS) will be collecting signatures at the town centre event.

Tesco is finalising an application to move from Orchard Lane to a larger store on the site of Ledbury Welding.

LOTS fear the move will decimate town centre trade and have accused Tesco of “behaving contemptuously” with their bid.

Spokesperson Rich Hadley urged residents to sign the petition, saying the Tesco’s plans had nothing to do with local needs.

“The size of the superstore is dictated purely by Tesco’s desire to generate additional profits by grabbing a bigger share of the Ledbury retail market,” said Mr Hadley.

LOTS will also launch an intensive letter-writing campaign in opposition to the planning application.

Their fight took another twist last week after Sainsbury's confirmed plans to build opposite the Tesco site.
