SINGAPORE RESTAURANT

HAVING picked up a couple of decent takeaways from the Singapore over the summer, it was high time to have a sit down meal.

The restaurant occupies a prime spot in Friar Street, Worcester, and it stands conveniently next to a pub... so far, so good.

My dining companion and I were given a warm welcome by our friendly host.

The restaurant was a little quiet for a Saturday night and only about eight other people were seated during the course of our meal.

However, the Singapore was clean and crisp in appearance and the certificate diplaying a five-star food hygiene rating from the city council boded well.

With understated Chinese décor and music, the ambience was fairly relaxed throughout.

The menu specialises in Szechuan, Cantonese and Peking cuisine and a wide range of dishes is on offer. As you would expect, there is not only an abundance of meat, fish and seafood but also a decent vegetarian section, too.

After enjoying complimentary crisp prawn crackers from our attentive, friendly waitress, and a refreshing Sun Lik beer, it was time to order.

For starters I was torn between Chinese smoked chicken on seaweed or minced chicken lettuce wraps. I opted for the latter and was pleased with my choice. The stir-fried chicken combined well with the finely chopped salad. It tasted good – the lettuce crisp and fresh.

My partner chose sweetcorn soup. She said it was tasty and piping hot with a pleasant thick texture.

For mains my companion chose Thai style king prawns with sweet chilli sauce, accompanied by boiled rice. She declared it delicious.

The prawns were just right and the sauce suitably thick and sweet without being overbearing.

My stir-fried squid with green peppers in black bean sauce accompained by boiled rice was spot on. The squid just the right texture, not too chewy, and the sauce, again, came with a bit of a kick but not too overpowering For dessert my companion chilled the spice of her mains with a soothing honey and ginger ice-cream. It tasted good. I just had to have a scoop, the honey and ginger melded well together.

I plumped for a fruit salad, which was fine. No complaints here. The bill for three courses and a drink each, came to a reasonable £40.

Overall, we were quite impressed with the Singapore. It has a nice atmosphere, friendly staff and good food all at a decent price.
