PLANS to curry favour with businesses, sports teams and schools are afoot for a cause very close to the heart of Herefordshire.

Local supporters of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity hope the county’s military roots will encourage record numbers to join in an Indian food day on April 20.

Organisers are planning a special meeting at the city’s racecourse – The Soldiers’ Charity Herefordshire Raceday – as part of ABF’s national Big Curry event.

Branch secretary Ronnie Wilks said: “Thanks to the British Army, curry is the nation’s favourite dish.

“Back in the 19th and 20th century, 20,000 soldiers were stationed across the sub-continent and the cooks of the East India Company developed anglicised versions of Indian dishes. Curry as we now enjoy it was born.”

Seven races including the Soldiers’ Charity Herefordshire Cup are up for sponsorship, while visitors will also get to enjoy a range of family activities at a reduced price.

Chef Rayeesa Asghar-Sandys and cooks from the Green Dragon Hotel have also pledged to bring the best Indian flavours out of Herefordshire, while Gilly’s Cafe in Eardisley and Lyonshall’s The Royal George are also arranging their own events.

In the meantime fellow community groups are invited to get involved and raise money for a charity which must double its fund-raising total as its commitments increase amid current conflicts.

“I encourage everybody to plan a ‘Big Curry’ event now and seize the opportunity to support the bravest of the brave,” branch chairman Major-General Arthur Denaro added.

“We may or may not believe in the politics that send soldiers to war. What we can do is our best to support our mates, sons and daughters, partners and friends if they are wounded.”
