Shawbury United 6 Kington Town 1

A YOUNG Kington side, fielding eight players under-21, held their own against West Midlands League Premier Division opponents Shawbury for the first half but shipped five goals after the interval to crash to their 22nd reverse of the season.

The visitors were caught napping by a long throw in the second minute as Shawbury pounced to take an early lead. Unbowed, the youngsters fought back and levelled before the break when David Griffiths crossed for Sam Mayglothling to turn and fire home.

Midfielders Duncan Morgan and Paul Allam worked hard to gain a lot of possession but the visitors were unable to turn it into goals.

After the break, Kington were hit by a couple of disputed decisions. The first when the young female referee awarded Shawbury a goal when visiting goalkeeper Bryan Kirkham was wrestled into the net after gathering the ball, and the second when Griffiths was through on goal only to be called back as Kington were given a free-kick.

Shawbury extended their lead and although Kington wasted a couple of chances to reduce arrears, they tired in the last quarter as the hosts ran in three further goals.
