Wellington 2

Bewdley Town 1

TWO superb free kicks from Will Perkins created the goals that enabled Wellington to beat the West Midlands League Premier Division's leading scorers Bewdley Town in a very competitive clash.

The hosts made the best possible start when Perkins floated a right-wing curling free kick into the Bewdley box in the third minute, forcing the visiting centre-half to head past his own goalkeeper as he was challenged by home skipper Pete Wallace.

Buoyed by their success, Wellington continued to press and went further ahead when an almost identical free kick from Perkins eluded the Bewdley goalkeeper to find the far, top corner of the net.

With more than 90 league goals to their credit, Bewdley piled on the pressure after the break but were met by a determined home defence, superbly marshalled by Dale Withers. Teenage striker Lee Mussell, pressed into service as a substitute defender, grew in stature as Bewdley threw men forward as they tried to reduce arrears.

However it took them until the 84th minute to crack the home back-line, but in spite of persistent late pressure, Wellington held out for a thoroughly deserved victory.
