Ledbury's run of five wins came to a halt as they were convincingly beaten by a determined and well-disciplined side enjoying home advantage.

Nuneaton Old Edwardians 45pts, Ledbury 8pts

From the kick-off, the writing was on the wall when Ledbury sought close-quarter contact against a larger pack who were only to happy to play a tight game.

Within 10 minutes, Nuneaton were 5-0 up and it looked as though it was going to be a long afternoon.

A converted try followed shortly after from a five-metre scrum but Ledbury responded with a penalty after 20 minutes.

There then followed a lull, with both teams playing some really ugly rugby. A break down the right wing by Nuneaton saw Rob Collins catch a flailing arm and go off injured. A try followed to take the score to 19-3 and Bruce Jones replaced the injured scrum-half.

The last play of the half resulted in another score to the home team after Ledbury failed to put the ball out of play.

The second half began with Ledbury scoring their only try through Chris Stokes but the game then drifted until the last ten minutes, when the home side ran in four further tries.

Keith McCulloch had a great day in the scrummage against a very good opponent but apart from that, it was a well below-par performance for the side.

"You don't become a bad team overnight. We all know we played badly and we need to regroup and go for the win away at Solihull," said director of rugby Darrell Williams, looking ahead to tomorrow's game (Saturday).

The next home game is the derby against Hereford on Saturday, February 11, kick-off at 2.15pm.
