Reading aloud is alive and thriving, as evidenced by students from across the county who took part in Friday evening's event at St Katherine's Hall in Ledbury.

Organised by the Herefordshire branch of the English Speaking Union as part of the Ledbury English Festival, the competitors from Years 6 - 9 read a selected passage of text and a poem of their own choice.

Passages ranged from Lord of the Rings to Great Expectations and poems from Roger McGough to William Blake. Adjudicators had a hard task given the standard of entries. The winners were: Year 6, Rosannagh Knight; Year 7, Hebe Dickins; Year 8, Evie Howard and Year 9 Isabel Otter-Barry Ross.
