Acorns had been looking for a site in Worcester for several years, aware that many of the families in need of its services had to travel long distances to either Selly Oak or Walsall.
Their prayers were answered when June Sayce offered them land which had been much sought-after by developers but which she and her husband Willie had resolutely refused to sell.
June (above), who with her husband formerly bred donkeys, gave the valuable plot to the hospice at the express wish of her husband, following his death. Though they had no children of their own, June and Willie's gift means that they will have made a difference to the lives of hundreds of children.
Willie died shortly after the land had been signed over to Acorns, but June was thrilled to be at Monday's opening, delighted to see just what a former donkey paddock could be turned into.
