NORTH-WEST Herefordshire's black and white villages are among the most attractive in the country. Fine examples of timber-framed buildings and beautiful churches abound, and everywhere there are reminders of the long history of the area, with Weobley, considered by many to be the finest example of a black and white village in the country, having been established as long ago as the 7th century.

The Black and White Village Trail is an easy way to get to know this interesting and historic part of the county. The trail is a 40-mile circuit, leading the visitor through Weobley, Pembridge and Eardisland, among other villages, in addition to allowing the possibility of getting to know the attractive market towns of Kington and Leominster.

At Pembridge the Market Hall stands beside the early 14th century New Inn, and steps lead up to St Mary's Church with its remarkable detached wooden belfry.

As well as exploring the villages, the visitor has the opportunity to take in attractions such as the Oaklands Small Breeds Farm, near Kington, Hergest Croft gardens and the Elizabethan Kinnersley Castle.

From Pembridge a diversion can be made to Luntley to see Dunkerton's Cider Company, where

organic Herefordshire cider is made using traditional methods and old varieties of cider apples.

A visit to Horseway Herbs, near Kington, is also worth the trip. Described as a hidden treasure it includes a herb nursery and cottage garden.
