A PACKED bank holiday crowd in Bredenbury witnessed a strange feat this week when a daredevil pensioner crossed a lake on a quad bike.

George Watkins drove the specially-adapted vehicle to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Back in 1977 he performed a similar stunt when he piloted a tractor through deep water.

"The Stoke Bliss Ploughing Society thought it was about time I did it again for charity. I just put my trust in the Lord and did it," he said.

The bike had an additional set of tyres and polystyrene plates fitted underneath for buoyancy.

But the 74 year-old, who cannot swim, still risked plummeting to the bottom of the 30ft deep lake.

"You just have to hold your nerve and keep absolutely still so you don't wobble," he added.
