Martyn Moxley, head of English at John Masefield High School, went to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, where he chatted with Prince Edward about the Ledbury Poetry Festival.
Mr Moxley, a trustee of the festival, was chosen for the visit by Herefordshire LEA for his contribution to education and his support of workshop sessions, where professional writers give master-classes in local schools.
He was among 1,000 teachers in the State Rooms for a special "Theme Day", which was also attended by Education Minister David Blunkett.
Mr Moxley did not get to speak to the Queen because of the crowds, but managed tell Prince Edward about the Ledbury Poetry Festival.
He said: "I'm extremely proud to belong to this professional but I'm the tip of the iceberg. There are thousands of other good teachers."
At the gathering, Mr Moxley was offered asparagus tarts, wild mushroom slices and sweetcorn wrapped in smoked salmon.
Blanca Rey-Surman, Ledbury Poetry Festival organiser, said she was "delighted" that Mr Moxley had been invited to the Palace.
She said: "He is responsible for the education side of the festival. The Poets in Residence Scheme is vital to the event."
