A DAY of celebration is in store at Hereford's Waterworks Museum this Sunday.

A host of local dignitaries will be travelling to the Broomy Hill site in a fleet of vintage cars before unveiling a brand new waterwheel exhibit.

The overshot wheel was previously a key part of a maritime museum at Cardiff Bay and is expected to be a major bonus for the city tourist spot.

Other attractions on show during the open day include a replica water-lifting device from 2,000 years ago and a series of wall displays depicting the history of Herefordshire's aquatic supply.

The museum is trying to get children more involved this year so Freddy the Naughty Frog will help little kids around while Amos the Victorian apprentice will guide teenagers.

And budding young engineers will be able to perform simple experiments to illustrate some of the principles involved in supplying water.

There are many other interesting machines on show, including the water pumping station that saved Leominster from an epidemic of typhoid fever in 1865.

The open day runs from 2pm to 5pm with the classic car cavalcade taking place at around 3pm. For more details telephone 01432 356653.
