MORE than 250 people turned up for a diabetes screening test in Leominster. Of these, 17 were found to have a blood sugar content above the level of eight and were referred to their own GP for further investigation, writes LIZ WATKINS.

The free tests were organised by Leominster Lions Club and chairman Martin Scott said they were amazed by the response.

"People started arriving at 9.30am and they just kept coming. It proves people are interested and greatly concerned about their health,'' he said.

The tests were free and Mr Scott said because of the success of the venture it was now likely to take place each year.

A total of 254 people were tested, equal numbers of men and women and ranging from the early 20s to pension age.The simple blood test was quickly analysed and those with a count of more than eight were told and a notice sent to their GP.

Local doctors backed the scheme and the testing was carried out by local district nurses who fitted it in to their work time.

Diabetes specialist nurse Sister Viv Barraclough said people came from as far as Ross-on-Wye and Hereford for the test and it was extremely worthwhile.

She said early diagnosis for diabetes was of great importance and initial symptoms included thirst, extreme tiredness and the need to constantly 'spend a penny'.
