FORGET the 'Angel of the North' - it's the Angel of north Herefordshire that could soon have people talking, writes RICHARD WILSON.

Three sites in the town have been chosen to house public art sculptures that will help form a 'trail' for visitors to follow.

As well as a position outside the leisure centre and one by the council offices in Rowberry Street, an area in Nunwell Park has been found for the centrepiece project.

"Whatever the design may be, the sculpture at Nunwell will be visible as people drive along the bypass," said town centre manager Carl Jones.

"It will be seen by loads of people and could become synonymous with the town, like the Angel of the North on the A1 is for Gateshead."

Three local artists have been commissioned to come up with designs for the work, which is being paid for by a mixture of council and European cash.

Submissions have to be in by the end of this month with the winners being unveiled after a public display in July.

"We may give the work for all three pieces to one artist or split it up between the three," added Mr Jones.

"We've been flexible about the designs they can come up with but we asked them to think about the actual meaning of Bromyard - broomy enclosure - to give them a starting point.

"Whatever we end up with, I'm sure it will help encourage people to come and visit the town."

The total cost of the project is expected to exceed £15,000.
