A Hereford motorcycle instructor has kick-started a training scheme to help reduce the county's grim accident figures.

Three motorcyclists have already been killed on Herefordshire's roads this year and four have been seriously injured.

From April 1 1998 to March 31 2000, there were nine deaths, 59 bikers seriously hurt and 105 with slight injuries.

The statistics have prompted Dave Williams to join forces with PC Colin Kerfoot, West Mercia police and the ambulance service in a bid to improve riding skills.

Between them, they have devised a package that will bring motorcyclists up to a level approved by the Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists. The course will also comprise first aid and legal elements.

Hereford Advanced Rider Training Scheme (HEARTS) is to be launched on July 9 from 9am onwards in the car park of the Rose and Crown, Ledbury Road , Hereford.

The scheme is to be run on a voluntary basis and has so far attracted sponsorship from Hereford Motorcycle Centre and A Plan Insurance. More backing is needed to help buy equipment. Anyone interested in supporting the scheme can contact Dave, of Sherrington Drive, Hereford, on 01432 263368.

l Hereford bikers have held their second charity ride to the coast.

So far, they have raised more than £3,000 for this year's charity, the Acorns Children's Hospice. A cheque will be handed over on August 6.

Dave Williams thanked all the bikers who took part, the staff, management and customers at the Rose and Crown and sponsors. Readers wishing to donate can contact Dave on the above number or call in at the pub.
