Burton 3 pts Hereford 22

FINBAR Heavens scored all the points as Hereford completed a double over bottom team Burton to move up a place in the Midlands 1 table on Saturday.

Heavens kicked five penalties before converting his own try as the Wyesiders followed up September's 20-16 victory over the Staffordshire club to take over sixth position.

The Hereford forwards started where they left off in the previous week's cup victory over Luctonians and forced their opponents into errors. But Heavens missed a kickable penalty after 10 minutes and winger Danny Gomberra lacked support for the final touch when he made two dangerous breaks and was stopped just short of the line.

Heavens then found the target with two penalties in five minutes and the backs followed up with two good runs, but the final passes did not go to hand.

Burton fought back and when they were awarded a scrum overeager hooker Gareth Miles struck too early against the head and Steve Henstock reduced arrears from the resultant penalty.

Miles made amends with a superb 25-yard break but there was a lack of support for link play when he was brought down near the line.

Henstock then missed two penalties, which could have changed the game Burton's way, but it was Heavens who made a successful kick to give Hereford a 9-3 interval lead.

Miles, who suffered a knock and was replaced by Simon Lively, missed the second half and Hereford lacked cohesion for the first 10 minutes when lock Phil Jones was off for a blood replacement.

But they eventually clicked back into gear with Heavens landing two more penalties and they rounded off the scoring with a fine move.

Number eight Andy Johnson, later voted man of the match, picked up from the back of a scrum and fed Ben Jenkins. The scrum-half sent the ball out to Gomberra, who, in turn, brought Jeremy Grisman into play and Heavens had only to catch the ball and fall over the line for the only try of the game.

l Hereford 2nd's game at Cinderford was called off but the 3rd XV beat Old Tylerians 12-7 away with tries from Dave Boast and Peter Robbins and a conversion from Lyndon Day.

Hereford Colts gained a 17-7 win over Greyhound Dog, who conceded numerous penalties, while the Under-16s narrowly lost 10-6 at home to their Halesowen counterparts. After a Nick Nugent try, converted by Ross Forster, gave Hereford the lead, Halesowen pulled level and then sealed the game with a drop-goal near the end.

The Under-13s beat Halesowen 39-0 with tries from Sean Day, Kieran Hayes, Tom Jenkins, Richard Rees, Daniel Lewis, James Lindsay and Austyn Lewis and two conversions from Morgan Goodall.
