TWO Herefordshire theatre companies have taken centre stage in the latest round of funding from the Regional Arts Lottery Programme.

The spotlight has fallen on Ross Operatic & Dramatic Society (ROADS) and the About Face Theatre Company based in Leominster.

ROADS has received £50,000 to refurbish and extend facilities at the Phoenix Theatre in Ross-on-Wye.

The refurbishment will eventually see the theatre increase its capacity to about 100 seats from the present 63, together with improved backstage facilities.

Major contribution

The Phoenix contributes strongly to the arts scene in the local area, so the project should have significant impact beyond the 250 members who provide a busy annual programme of plays and musical events.

About Face, Herefordshire's theatre company for actors with learning disabilities, has been awarded £25,000 for a project entitled 'The Wavewatchers'.

This is About Face's first commissioned script, resulting in an exciting performance using puppetry, shadow play, music and drama.

The play, which is being produced in collaboration with the Fetch Mask and Puppet Theatre, will tour rural areas in the West Midlands.
