Hereford United Director of Football Graham Turner is backing at least one of his players to get an England call-up this season.

Three Bulls players -- skipper Ian Wright, midfielder Mark Taylor and striker Rob Elmes -- turned out for an FA XI against the Combined Services at Worcester City earlier this week.

The match was one of a series of trials for the England semi-pro team and Turner believes all three have selection chances.

Elmes, who scored the first goal, and Taylor, a late call-up, played in the first half of the 4-0 victory, while Wright lasted the whole game and set up the final goal.

Wright, who has been outstanding this season, probably stands the best chance, although Elmes and Taylor have also been in impressive form and could also be in contention along with defender Paul Sturgess, who had to withdraw from the squad through injury.

Turner said: "I would hope that Ian Wright, if not the other two, are given serious consideration.

"It would be an honour to have any of our players selected, and it would be nice to see one or more of them get in."

The United boss was among the spectators at St George's Lane and said: "I am not sure what the theory was in taking Elmes and Taylor off at half-time, but they both did quite well and Wright was quite comfortable right through the game.

"It was only when the FA side went down to 10 men that the Combined Services came into the game."

Two internationals have been arranged -- away to Italy on March 1 and against Holland at Northwich on March 21.

Surprisingly, no Hereford player has ever been capped by England since they returned to the non-league ranks.

But with several of their players having been brought to national prominence by their fine FA Cup run, perhaps this will be the season when they break through.
