Hereford United could hand a debut to defender Paul Sturgess in tonight's Nationwide Conference clash with Nuneaton Borough at Edgar Street (7.45).

The former Charlton and Millwall defender has agreed to join the Bulls for a month with a view to a permanent deal.

Sturgess, aged 24, impressed Director of Football Graham Turner when he played in the friendly victory over Coventry City earlier this month.

Personal terms could still be a problem, however, for the Kent-based player, who is added to the 14 who were on duty in the 1-1 draw at Sutton on Saturday.

Turner said: "He is registered and will be available for tonight's game. We will see how it goes for the next month."

But Turner may make changes to the starting line-up against new boys Nun-eaton, having been unimpressed with their performance at Sutton.

He said: "We salvaged a point out of what I thought, for the first half-hour of both halves, was disappointing.

"We didn't get the ball down often enough and pass it, and Sutton had their will imposed on us. The feeling is that there is lots of room for improvement."

United will certainly need to improve against a Nuneaton side who opened with a 2-1 home win over Hayes, and who should include former Hereford goalkeeper Chris MacKenzie in their side.

Turner added: "They have had a good start. They have a lot of experienced players in their side and it should be a good atmosphere."
