A SUSPECT case of foot-and-mouth at Ross collection centre on Tuesday evening resulted in the slaughter of 172 sheep and restrictions placed on the site and inside an 8km ring.
The sheep were at the market's collection centre for onward transport to an abattoir.
A consignment of 38 lambs from the Monmouth area were slaughtered first on suspicion and a further 134 as a precautionary measure at the market's veterinary centre.
A spokeswoman for DEFRA said that there would be no animal movement until the results of blood tests on the animals were known and an all-clear given. Blood-testing should be completed within a week.
Wednesday's furniture sale at the market was cancelled and farmers were notified of the cancellation of cattle collection on Friday.
The DEFRA spokeswoman said: "A Form A notice has been placed on the site. There will be no animal movement and everything is closed on the site until the all-clear is given."
