AYLESTONE School teacher Rhian Floyd has hit her first target in a bid to compete at next summer's Commonwealth Games.

Floyd, who has set her sights on shooting for Wales at the championships, has gained her first senior call up to the Great Britain air rifle squad.

The Leominster Rifle and Pistol Club member has represented Wales since 1996 and was a member of the Great Britain junior team.

"The selectors chose the squad according to the average scores last season," said Floyd, who is in her third year at Aylestone School. I enjoyed a good and consistent last season so, although I was confident of being called up, I am still very pleased."

She added: "The Common-wealth Games is my aim and I am quietly confident of making the team. I represented the Wales squad at the 1998 games in Kuala Lumpur when I was in Oxford training to be teacher, so I am hoping to be part of it again."

Floyd, who teaches geography, has been shooting competitively since a Great Britain Junior team selector spotted her potential at the age of 12.

Earlier this year, she finished runner-up in Class A of the British Championships and she was part of the Wales team at the Shooting Federation's Commonwealth Championships, a dry run for the Commonwealth Games. Floyd finished 11th out of 21 competitors.

She has made a fine start to the new campaign, having just won Class A at the Staffordshire Open, and will be aiming to continue her success at the Welsh Open in Cardiff this weekend.
