HANDY Herefordshire people are wanted to respond to a cry from help from a remote part of Africa.

The Hands Around the World charity believes that education is a vital tool in the fight against poverty.

Following a plea from the Aluka Secondary School in West Nile Province in Uganda, the charity aims to help build a hostel to provide female living quarters as part of an initiative to promote educational opportunities for girls.

The charity intends to send a group of people from the Hereford, Ross and Monmouth areas, details of which will be outlined in public meetings at the end of November.

After walking up to 20 kilometres to school the girls are then set chores at home leaving them tired and without adequate time to complete their homework - consequently, their education suffers.

At the hostel, the girls would be offered a safe environment where they can concentrate more fully on their education increasing long-term benefits for individuals and the community alike.

The project is scheduled for June 2002 and will last for four weeks although the charity stresses that it will definitely not be a holiday.

Volunteers will have to contend with no electricity or running water so it will be a challenging experience.

Director of Hands Around the World, Dr David Steiner said: "We are looking for a cross section of people to join the team, both young and mature, men and women, skilled and keen amateurs. They must have enthusiasm, adaptability and most importantly a sense of humour.

"The projects may be relatively small scale but what is achieved is far from small. Apart from the visible structural benefits there are lasting and worthwhile benefits of friendships forged, cultural divides bridged, a greater understanding of development issues and new perspectives on life gained."

Anyone interested in joining the team can attend one of the introductory meetings at Ross-on-Wye Baptist Church on November 21 at 7.30pm and at The Royal Oak, Hereford Road, Monmouth on November 22 at 7.30pm.
