CUSTOMERS were evacuated and an elderly woman taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after fire broke out at a pub near Leominster.

Two fire crews and an ambulance paramedic attended the scene at the King's Head, Docklow, after a gas-fired barbecue sparked off a kitchen blaze on Tuesday evening.

Mrs Jean Cessford, who is in her 80s, a member of the family at the inn, was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke. She was said to be recovering well yesterday.

More than 30 customers were evacuated to the pub garden. Yesterday the pub was open for drinks and the kitchen was expected to re-open by tomorrow, Friday, following cleaning-up operations.
