TESCO in Hereford city centre will put the brakes on abandoned trollies by introducing deposit locks in a bid to stop vandals running off with them.
The new system will come into effect on July 8 when customers will be required to put a £1 deposit into the lock to release the trolley.
Tesco spokesman, Greg Sage said: "People running off with our trollies has become a big problem at our town centre store. Some people leave them lying around the car park and some people run off with them and leave them around the town or even dump them in the river.
"We want to make a positive contribution to the local environment and have also asked the Environment Agency to clean out the river and recover our trollies."
