HerefordSHIRE College of Art and Design's Summer Show provided the usual high tide mark of talent for the city's art scene.

Winner of the Samsung Prize for Design in New Media is Marc Salmon, 18. Marc produced a promotional CD-Rom for the National Diploma Graphic Design course at the College.

Commissioned by the College the core concept for the project is for the user to interact with the CD and complete a journey of fact-gathering, viewing a selection of work from past and current students en route.

"It'll be excellent for me to be able to give prospective students a copy of Marc's work on a credit card sized CD, allowing them to see for themselves exactly what the course is capable of," explained Kate La Barre, marketing officer for the College.

Marc's inspiration came from record shops, when he was walking through High Town.

"The fact that you can go in various routes and directions within the course made me realise that the best way to communicate that fact to prospective students was to represent the course as a journey through learning."

In possession of a conditional offer to study Graphic Communication at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, Marc's enthusiasm for his medium and the course itself is obvious.

"The best two years of my life, so far" is how he describes his time at the College.

Winner of the Sun Valley Award for Media is Alex Sherry, 19. Her exhibition consists of three projects from her time on the BTEC National Diploma in Media Production course.

Alex chooses emotive subject matter for her work, one of which is a study of the Aberfan disaster with which she has a family connection. Showing flair and aptitude in both creative writing processes and photography, she is going on to study Journalism at Southampton University.

Nina Mankin on the BA (Hons) Design Crafts Degree course takes three prizes. From London, Nina chose to study at Herefordshire College because of its national reputation.

Her unique collection of work explores the subject of childhood, dreams and memories and she wins the Brian Hatton Award, the HP Bulmer Award for Design Crafts and the College prize for Business and Professional Studies.

After enjoying some time off, Nina plans to return to London where she will take up a studio and hopefully get some animation work in addition to continuing making.
