TALK -- A former Under Secretary General to the United Nations, Dame Margaret Anstee, who lives at Knill, near Presteigne, was the speaker at a group meeting of Brilley and Michaelchurch Women's Institute. She gave a fascinating account of her distinguished career with the UN development organisation, working with governments across the world on a great variety of economic and social projects from health care to agriculture. Dame Margaret was one of the first women to work in this field, and in the early days of the UN, many of the governments with which she liaised were still extremely chary of a woman in a position of such authority, but happily nowadays few countries find it a problem. For this most memorable evening, Brilley and Michaelchurch members were joined by others from several neighbouring institutes.
