A LARGE crowd basked in the overdue sunshine at the Broadheath meeting under BHRC rules at Almeley, and enjoyed some memorable triumphs.

The much under-rated reinsman, Terry Laven-ture, only had two drives on the 10-race card and powered to victory on both Wellfield Baroness and Wellfield Peach for owner/trainer/breeder Roy Sheedy.

Leominster-based builder Patrick Morris was another driver who had a day to remember, bombing home in explosive fashion with Edward and Sara Layton's Patchpiece Ted in the Intermediate event.

Jimmy Hamblett's Cam Dancer may be 11, but he has never been better in his life, sprinting home in the red hot top grade heat by a length with Patrick on the sulky seat.

The 10-runner final was a hair-raising affair, with the whole field in with a chance approaching the home straight, but Patrick rallied Cam Dancer to just head his talented stablemate, Inez Gale, who had won an earlier heat in the hands of David Bevan, giving the Hamblett's their second glorious one-two of the season. Bevan also scored a double when Vyrnwy George continued to cruise to future stardom with a breathtaking triumph in the Improver.

Joyce Morlidge's Ynys Erin is destined for the paddocks next season but is making her final season count, blazing home in the first heat in the hands of Pandy trainer Paul Evans.

Bill Boughton's chestnut mare Billsgoldnandshake scored a poignant success for Wales & West chairman Stella Havard when she blazed home unchallenged in division 1 of the novice. This was Stella's first winner since being sidelined due to surgery last year.

Tillington accountant Rob Millichap made a glorious raid on Pikehall the previous week, winning a heat and just being pipped in the final with his stalwart 11-year-old Tom Sawyer, another who had been sidelined in 2001.

The partnership followed this up by taking the Almeley mile-and-a-half event by the scruff of the neck early on, and repelling all determined challenges for a dogged victory.

lNext meeting Amman Valley, Sunday 2 pm.
