MADAM, Having read Mr and Mrs Richards letter concerning Hereford's Jubilee celebrations (Hereford Times, June 13) I wish to write about what was also on offer in the city on the Jubilee Monday.

Anyone wanting to see a concert featuring local talent would have been well-served if they'd joined the other 3,000-or-so people that witnessed some or all of the city's official daytime event, which ran in High Town, from 11.30am to 5.15pm.

Part of the national BBC Music Live festival, it was organised by us at The Music Pool, along with the Hereford City Partnership, and kindly paid for by grants from the Hereford City Council and Lottery Awards for All.

They would have seen and heard Hereford's 70-strong Fire Choir, and the 25-piece Bandemonium, the county's community band. Also performing were local dance groups Hereford Academy of Dance, and the break-dancing Juice Crew. In fact, there was an emphasis on a variety of music and dance styles to represent all eras of the Queen's reign, from dance-band to rap, jazz to punk rock, and this was ably delivered by a selection of the area's top professional, semi-pro and amateur groups.

If they were thirsty, and of a certain age, they could also have dropped in at the senior citizens' free-of-charge afternoon tea at St Peter's Church House.

They would (hopefully) have noticed the publicity for the day, through coverage in The Hereford Times and other local press, posters and fliers around the city, and trailers and features on BBC Hereford and Worcester.

They could even have listened to it live throughout the day on BBC Hereford and Worcester, and later that evening, settled down with their weary feet up, and watched selections on BBC television.

I'm afraid I cannot comment on the evening event - I wasn't there, as I was busy clearing up after our High Town event, and The Music Pool were not involved in its organisation. However, I feel sure that at least as much hard work went into it as did into ours - and everyone's saying how fantastic the fireworks were.

So the city's Jubilee celebrations as a whole were not completely bereft of council support. As I stated above, we're most grateful for Hereford City Council's support, which enabled so many local people to celebrate the Jubilee in such a great way.
