A PEAL of bells at a Herefordshire village church is missing a dong.

One of the six bells at Almeley's St Mary's Church has a ring 'like a bucket is being kicked' since developing a crack.

The 17th century bell will now have to be melted down and re-cast, at a cost of £5,000.

Bell ringer Irene Holden said: "It is the fourth bell in a peal of six. We are ringing five bells at the moment, which doesn't sound particularly great, but at least we are keeping them ringing."

The village now has to raise £5,000 to pay for the bell to be re-cast at a foundry in Loughborough. Around £3,000 has already been raised.

Fundraising will continue on Saturday when Bargoed Male Voice Choir sing at the church.

The concert starts at 7.15pm, tickets are available from Almeley Post Office on 01544 327431. Donations can be sent by contacting Irene Holden at Lady Hawkins School, Kington on 01544 230441.
