MANAGER Graham Turner wants his Hereford United players to finish the season with a flourish, despite crashing out of the Nationwide Conference promotion race.

The Edgar Street boss is calling for his sixth-placed team to put on a string of impressive displays, starting with Saturday's home clash with relegation threatened Leigh RMI and then Monday's trip to Southport.

He said: "It's important that we beat Leigh and put on a decent performance. The same goes for the match at Southport, while we are also looking forward to the Doncaster game. Doncaster should bring a big following to Edgar Street and we desperately wanted to go into that last game of the season within touching distance of them."

Goals from Matt Clarke and Paul Parry, who is set to return after injury, gave Hereford a comfortable 2-0 win at Leigh in October, while the Bulls travel to Southport vying to avenge a 2-0 home defeat in November.

Hereford's play-off aspirations were finally dashed in a 1-0 defeat at Halifax Town last Saturday, which left Turner in despair.

He made two changes at half time and said it would have been three had it not been for the enforced substitution of Andy Tretton, who is likely to miss this weekend's matches through injury.

"In the first half, I did not think that we were performing anywhere near the level we should have been given the importance of the game," said Turner.

"We had played well in our previous match against Burton, so, with Paul Parry out injured, we kept the same team and brought in another left-sided player - but it did not work out."

Meanwhile, United will get a £5,000 windfall from Yeovil Town following the Glovers' promotion to the Football League. The money is part of the transfer deal that took Michael McIndoe from Edgar Street to Huish Park.

Shrewsbury Town and Exeter occupy the two relegation places in Division 3, while Accrington Stanley have achieved promotion to the Conference and Aldershot and FA Trophy finalists Tamworth are favourites to achieve promotion from the two other feeder leagues.
